Does that block have very few water jackets or is that dark grey-ness something covering the deck?

This V6 is a closed deck block. Good old cast iron lol.

Yeah, planning ahead lol. Im racing the car a bit more at autocross events and having a backup isnt a bad idea.

So I guess this brings up a point I have been struggling with for a long time. I currently have a 98 camaro v6. No real issues than oil leaks.
So I want to build it up and I don’t know if you have any experience with it but LS swap or build the V6?
I know the 3800 series can take the power even with a stock crank. But I feel you can’t beat a V8.

The recent 3.9 v6 is getting lots of play lately. Responds very nice to some boost too.

With the price of them today, I’d honestly just happily drive the stock V6 car and save for a V8 car. The price difference is so minimal right now as the market is just about bottomed out. You can get your hands on a clean LSx Fbody for reasonable price and start there.
My car is one of those rare breeds that’s had a lot of time, money, and effort put into it that just keeps me plugging along with what I have for the time being. Next step involves a standalone ECU, so if I grow tired of the V6, a V8 will more than likely take its place post haste.
Granted, I work at a speed shop, so parts and equipment to make it happen are a little easier to snag.

And that’s similar to where I’m at other than working for a speed shop which must be nice lol. I have had the car 10+ years now, so i have peiced the car together to where i want right now. And i already have other DDs so I want a project.
My reasoning is no matter what I get the LS f-body for, (3k to 8k depending on condition) I still have to shell out money for a car that I won’t be happy with stock. And the LS1 inherently has a couple more issues than most other LS as it was the building block. (I.e. sleeves and heads). For a similar price I can build a mild 4.8 or 5.3l
The other side of reasoning on the 3800, is that everything is there. Stuff will need to be built up for the power but it’s ready now with out having to source anything.

If I were to do it all over again, I probably would LS swap it from the get-go but probably spring for an LS3 or similar variant with the “dry sump” setup and mimic the GMPP LS7 Camaro.
Granted, they did swap to an LS9 after that lol!

How the hell did they stuff an ls9 in there? Maybe the ls9 was is tighter packed than what I expect but still, fuck changing those spark plugs lol.
And ok overall that’s what I have been thinking. LS3 would be nice but LS2 is easier to get a hold of for cheaper.
